Send a gift to replenish our forests

Give the gift of a cleaner, greener world this Valentine’s Day. Send a $25 gift to directly support the sustainable care of forests. Our planet needs trees now more than ever due deforestation across our country and the world—send a gift today.

How it works

Once you fill out your friend or family member’s information and complete your purchase, we’ll send the recipient an email with your gift information—and you’ll receive a receipt.

You'll help plant trees in the Mississippi River Valley

When you send a gift, CleanChoice Energy invests in the growth of Mississippi River Valley forests by purchasing carbon offsets.

Carbon offsets fund projects that reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.

The carbon offsets we buy specifically support the growth of forests in the Mississippi River Valley. The Valley’s watershed encompasses 33 states and two Canadian provinces and provides fresh drinking water for more than 50 American cities.

It once contained the largest wetland ecosystem in North America, and still to this day, 40% of North America’s waterflow and 60% of all North American bird species migrate along the river. Unfortunately over the last three hundred years, nearly 75% of forests in this region have been cut down due to human settlement.2

Your gift can help.

By sending a gift to plant trees, you will be helping to replenish the Mississippi River Valley ecosystem and heal our planet for future generations.

The carbon offsets we purchase are from the Green Trees Mississippi River Valley project, which is recognized as the leading carbon reforestation program in North America.

How do CleanChoice Energy carbon offsets work?

Carbon offsets fund projects that reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. When you purchase carbon offsets with CleanChoice Energy, you are specifically helping to fund projects that support the protection and sustainable care of forests in Appalachia. These critical forests absorb and sequester carbon dioxide, storing it in their trunks, leaves, branches, roots and even in the forest soil. Each acre of forest that you support includes an offset of one ton of carbon out of our atmosphere.

Will I really be helping the environment?

Yes, and in a number of ways. First, and most obviously, you’ll be reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. But beyond that, the Appalachian region is home to one of the oldest and most biologically diverse mountain systems on the continent. This ecosystem offers a myriad of often unsung benefits such as providing critical regulation of soil and water to help prevent floods and droughts. Furthermore, protecting these woods helps ensure the continuation of critical habitat for thousands of critters and plants. Your gift supports the protection and revitalization of this beautiful ecosystem.

How does reforestation offset carbon pollution?

It’s not often talked about, but research1 shows that forests are the best technology we have to combat the rising levels of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Simply put, trees absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen; they are often referred to as the “lungs” of our planet. The carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and safely sequestered in their trunks, leaves, branches, roots and even in the forest soil for decades. The well-established value of forests has been documented and researched by scientists for decades. In fact, forests' power to store carbon dioxide is staggering: one tree can store an average of about 48 pounds in one year.

Will I really be helping the environment?

Yes. Natural climate solutions such as reforestation can help us achieve 37 percent of our climate target set by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - which is to limit global warming to a maximum of two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. It’s fair to say our climate depends on the growth of forests.2
